Smell the story.
The Dawn Ritual begins before sunrise at Konark, when the stone is still cool and the priests have been at work for hours before the first visitor arrives.
The Sun Temple was built in the thirteenth century so that the first light of the day would enter it. Every morning the sun arrives on schedule. The stone holds yesterday’s warmth and gives it back slowly.
Nothing here is spectacle. A dancer prepares, a drum waits for its first beat, a woman looks into a mirror before the day becomes public. It is the private ceremony before anyone is watching.
Cardamom and violet open the ritual, sharp, ceremonial and present. Iris and cypriol follow, then amber, sandalwood and cedarwood carry it into the warmth that lasts. Incense without the smoke.
